PORT ELIZABETH - SUMMERSTRAND VIOLENCE SEES 5 MEN BRUTALLY ASSAULT 35 YEAR OLD VICTIM

Five men are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Tuesday following a brutal assault on the city's beachfront on Sunday.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that a 35-year-old man was severely assaulted by five men at 8th Avenue in Summerstrand, shortly before 8 pm.

She says an off duty police officer who was nearby witnessed the assault.

The Constable came to the assistance of the victim and when he intervened, the suspects got into a car and fled.

Naidu says the policeman chased after them in his private vehicle and managed to stop them in Marine Drive near the Dolphins Leap centre.

The men aged between 22 and 36 were arrested for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The motive for the attack is not yet known as police have not yet been able to interview the victim.

An Eyewitness told Algoa FM News how he saw a group of men chasing the victim across the street, coming from the direction of the beach, where they relentlessly beat him with sticks before kicking him repeatedly.

Naidu says no shots were fired, however, the eyewitness said he heard more than one shot going off.
