Quick action by police led to the arrest of three suspects who were part of a group that robbed a store in Uitenhage on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said that six suspects, one of whom was armed, entered the business in Caledon Street late in the afternoon and asked to see the manager.
She said they demanded a bag of cash that was to be deposited in the bank and also the money from the cashiers.
They then fled in a white Mazda Midge.
“Police officers on patrol noticed the vehicle and after being alerted to the robbery immediately gave chase.”
Swart said with the help of police back-up the car was stopped in Short Street and the suspects fled in different directions.
However, officers were able to arrest three men, aged 19 to 25, and recovered a fake firearm as well as a bag containing the stolen money.
They will appear in court on Wednesday.
The police's 72-hour activation plan has now been set in motion and a team established to hunt down the remaining suspects.
