It is alleged that the four (4) suspects recruited unemployed people in Beaufort-West, Western Cape with the promise of employment in Graaff-Reinet.
They were transported in groups of five persons and then left at a house in Graaff-Reinet.
The recruits were then taken to the Graaff-Reinet municipality to get an address confirmation, supplied with three months of falsified pay sheets and ordered to open credit card accounts and the money was then withdrawn by the syndicate.
Fifty five (55) credit cards to the value of R1 700 000-00 were already issued.
The four suspects, aged between 24 and 44 will appear in the Middelburg Magistrates Court soon on charges of fraud. More arrests are imminent.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the members for tracing and arresting the suspects. She also commended the partnership and working relations between SAPS and Forensic Task Team of the Banking Institution.
“The relentless efforts by the task teams in tracing and arresting the suspects are impressive. These arrests result in the SAPS meeting its organisational objectives of serving the communities and will also send a strong message to those involved in organised crime that we mean business and it is only a matter of time before we catch up with their criminal activities”, said Lt General Ntshinga.
