NELSON MANDELA BAY - PANDEMIC RAGES ACROSS THE BAY AS CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASES HIT 1111 IN UITENHAGE & 1956 IN MOTHERWELL

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has noted with concern the high COVID-19 confirmed cases that have surpassed the 1000 mark in a number of hotspots across the City.

As at 16 July the City recorded 1111 COVID-19 cases in Uitenhage, 1036 in KwaNobuhle, 1033 in KwaZakhele and Motherwell at an alarming 1956 cases.

NMBM Acting Mayor Councillor Thsonono Buyeye said the recent statistics presented in a NMB COVID-19 Disaster Management Forum meeting on Tuesday morning showed that 336 people had died due to COVID-19 related illnesses.

"It is heart breaking to know that some of the deaths related to COVID-19 are deaths are caused by a simple negligence by some who choose to roam around and bring COVID-19 to thier families, fathers and mothers who strictly observe regulations without fail. I am making a call to our people, more especially the youth to stop roaming around and doing social gatherings, if you are still doing that at this time, you are bringing death to your loved ones," said Mayor Buyeye.

Mayor Buyeye said it was however encouraging that 4526 people had successfully beat COVID-19 and recovered.

NMBM COVID-19 Disaster Management chairperson Shane Brown said: “We will hold employers accountable for staff members that are not wearing masks while at work. As difficult as it can be to wear a mask for many hours, it is what is required of us to ensure the safety of ourselves, our families and colleagues.”
