PORT ELIZABETH - FOLLOWING EC PREMIERE'S PLEAS FOR HELP, SANDF TO DEPLOY 52 MILITARY HEALTH PRACTITIONERS IN PROVINCE

As coronavirus infections increase rapidly in the Eastern Cape, the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) is deploying a total of 52-military health care practitioners to the province.

They will arrive in Port Elizabeth on Sunday morning.

This intervention comes after Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane requested assistance for the overwhelmed health system in the province as a result of the pandemic.

The National Treasury has also injected nearly R8-billion into the province’s health care system.

The Eastern Cape province has seen a massive increase of COVID-19 cases, following the relaxing of lockdown regulations, which continues to put pressure on the health care system.

As the province is in the process of recruiting extra doctors and nurses, the SANDF will deploy a total of 35-military nurses, 12 doctors, and 5 clinical associates.

The Eastern Cape now has over 30 000 infections and has recorded over 400 deaths.
