EASTERN CAPE - HAWKS LAUNCH MANHUNT FOR DANGEROUS CASH-IN-TRANSIT SUSPECT WHO ESCAPED CUSTODY

The Hawks Serious Organised Crime investigation in East London is seeking assistance that could lead to the arrest of Lundi Mzimkhulu (33), who escaped from the lawful custody at Sada Prison on 14 August 2020.

It is alleged that Mzimkhulu, aided by several other inmates, allegedly pointed the correctional officials with a firearm, pushed them into the office, grabbed the prison gate keys and car keys and also stripped them of their clothing items.

Six inmates broke out of prison reportedly wearing the officials’ uniform jackets and caps, driving a state vehicle.

Three of the six were rearrested whilst Mzimkhulu and two others are still at large.

Initially, Mzimkulu was among three other suspect who were allegedly linked to a cash-in-transit heist in November 2018 in Whittlesea.

They were arrested the same day and the police recovered the stolen money and two firearms used in the commission of the crime.

The trio overpowered two police officers escorting them to Whittlesea Court on 11 March 2020, seized their firearms and used the police van to escape, which was later found abandoned in Dongwe location. Mzimkulu rearrested on 25 March 2020.

Anyone with information about the escapees’ whereabouts, can contact the investigating officer, Captain Nobuzwe Myeki on 071 481 3073, Crime stop on 0860 10111 or the My SAPS App. Information received will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
