Quick response by Elliotdale Detectives, which led to the arrest of the 28-year-old suspect for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, has been applauded.
It is alleged that the deceased, aged 33, was last seen with the suspect who was her boyfriend on Sunday, 18 October 2020 at about 00:25 at Mgantshi Locality, Melitafa Village, Elliotdale.
The lifeless body of the woman was found on the morning of Sunday, 18 October 2020 at an open veld near the village.
The matter was reported to the police and the investigation led to the arrest of the suspect at his home in the same village in the early hours of Monday, 19 October 2020.
The motive for the murder is unknown and police will not speculate.
The 28-year-old suspect will appear before the Elliotdale Magistrates Court on 20 October 2020 on a charge of murder.
“It is rather concerning that the incidents of young women who perish in the hands of their partners seem to be on the increase lately. However, the quick arrest of the suspects affirms the SAPS commitment in prioritising the investigations of gender based violence and femicide incidents”, said Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga earlier today.
Detectives will oppose bail when the suspect appears in court.
