NELSON MANDELA BAY - CORONAVIRUS STILL CONCERNING AS 157 NEW CASES REPORTED OVER 7 DAYS ACROSS THE BAY

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Acting Executive Mayor Councillor Thsonono Buyeye has called on residents to not drop the ball as the deadly COVID-19 continues to claim lives in the City.

Mayor Buyeye expressed his concern after the latest COVID-19 statistics were presented during the Joint Operation Centre meeting on Tuesday, 6 October 2020.

“During the meeting it was highlighted that four people died just in the last 24 hours and that reality did not sit well with us. We are very concerned and believe that one death is one too many. We are appealing to our resident to continue wearing their masks and to keep a social distance between themselves and anyone around them. We do not want a second wave.”

Of the four recorded deaths on Monday, three were from the public hospitals and one from a private hospital.

“Although the numbers of new infections have significantly dropped, we have not won the fight yet. We are however happy that our cases have dropped and appeal to residents to adhere to the regulations,” Mayor Buyeye said.

The Eastern Cape Department of Health said in the last 24 hours there were 17 new cases, with Motherwell still the hotspot in NMBM, followed by KwaNobuhle and Zidwe. In the past seven days 157 new cases were recorded across the City.

NMBM Disaster Management Head, Shane Brown said: “With the new infections we seem to have hit a plateau, we are not increasing or decreasing. It is between 15 to 20 new cases. Our big concern is that residents are carrying on with their lives as if there is no more COVID-19, people are not wearing their masks, and they are ignoring other regulations. While we understand that people are tired, we cannot let our guard down right now. We are calling on our residents to rather be cautious, we do not want to go back to the higher levels of the lockdown.”
