PORT ELIZABETH - MUNICIPALITY OFFICIALLY OPENS R31 MILLION STANFORD ROAD / N2 BRIDGE

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Roads and Transport Portfolio Head, Councillor Rosie Daaminds officially opened the completed R31million Stanford Road/N2 pedestrian bridge on Friday, 30 October 2020.

Despite the delays caused by the COVID-19 lockdown, Cllr Daaminds said it was important to note the progressive work done to benefit the residents of the Northern areas specifically.

“The Municipality put a lot of money into this project and finally today we are here to open it for the public. The work is beautiful; I want to salute the officials of Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS). There were a lot of politics surrounding the project in Council, standing committee but the residents will benefit now, specifically the people of the Northern areas. The vehicles will move more safely now as we have the pedestrian bridge.

“The aim of the project was to improve the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) infrastructure in order to incorporate additional vehicle lanes and this forms part of the NMBM public transport plans for the entire Metro. We also fixed a little bit on the Sanral roads so that there can be less accidents. SMME’s did benefit from the project as the value of the project was R31million and 12 SMME’s benefited from the project,” Cllr Daaminds said.

Ward 11 Councillor Abraham Isaacs said the bridge would improve the lives of the residents in his Ward who use the bridge on a daily basis.

“The bridge is much safer now, the residents are happy with the work. The bridge is bigger and we believe this will assist to curb accidents on the busy road.,” said Cllr Isaacs.
