PORT ELIZABETH - DELIVERY TRUCK DRIVERS TARGETED BY CRIMINALS IN PE AREA

Police in Port Elizabeth are warning delivery drivers to take extra precaution and to be vigilant at all times when driving. 

It has been noted that delivery trucks are being targeted by criminals and their load stolen.

On Wednesday, 02 December 2020, due to swift response by police the two vehicles with their cargo were recovered in two separate incidents in the Port Elizabeth area.

In the first incident, at about 09:25, the complainant (30) was driving a delivery vehicle, a Toyota Hilux bakkie when he was approached at the robot at Stanford Road by an unknown male. The suspect pointed a firearm at him. The complainant attempted to grab the firearm and a struggle ensued. Another male approached and also pointed a firearm at the complainant. The complainant and his crew got out and one male got in and drove off. The tracker was activated. It is alleged that the other male got into a car and followed the bakkie. PE K9 unit members recovered the bakkie with all the stock in the Govan Mbeki area.  No suspect was arrested.

In the second incident, at about 11:10, the complainant (31) was delivering aluminium doors and windows at a house in Kwaza Street in New Brighton when he was approached by two males as he stopped at the house. He was threatened with a firearm and dragged out of the vehicle. Both males got into the delivery vehicle and drove off.

The community assisted and police were immediately alerted. The vehicle was found abandoned in D Avenue behind New Brighton museum and the stock taken. Anti-Gang Unit members found the goods hidden in an abandoned building in Mama Street, Red location, New Brighton. No arrest were made.

Police are urging owners to take necessary precautions in safeguarding their property while in transit as well as ensuring the safety of their employees. Drivers to always be alert when driving especially when at the robots or stationary.
