SOUTH AFRICA - MKHIZE: FURTHER RESTRICTIONS NEEDED TO CURB THE SPREAD OF THE SECOND WAVE OF COVID-19 GRIPPING THE COUNTRY
Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, has acknowledged that further restrictions need to be enforced to help slow the spread of the second wave of coronavirus.
The country has recorded more than a million cases.
More than 26 000 people have died from COVID-19.
A new and more contagious variant of coronavirus is believed to be driving the second wave.
The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) has met to discuss options to curb the further spread of infections.
Mkhize says restrictions should be placed on hotspot areas.
“Now that the numbers are increasing, it is going to be important for us to make sure there are further restrictions. We have to talk about restrictions in terms of gatherings and risk areas that we have seen people behaving in a manner that created congestion and easy spread of the infection. I cannot make any speculation on levels, but I do believe that we need some ways of strengthening the containment measures.”
