UITENHAGE - 112 SUSPECTS ARRESTED ACROSS THE UITENHAGE AREA FOR CRIMES INCLUDING MURDER, RAPE, HIJACKING AND BURGLARY
As part of Safer Festive Season operations, high police visibility displayed throughout this weekend resulted in the arrest of 112 suspects between Friday, 18 December 2020 until Sunday, 20 December 2020 in Uitenhage, Kwanobuhle, Kamesh and Despatch policing areas.
The suspects were arrested for various offences such as murder, hijacking, rape, burglary, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft, burglary, malicious damage to property and contravention of protection orders.
During the operations, police also focussed on enforcing compliance in terms of the Liquor Act. A total of 41 fines were issued for liquor related offences that included drinking and drunken behaviour in public places. In addition, eight (8) Second-Hand Goods Act compliance inspections were conducted and 18 fines relating to the Disaster Management Act were issued. Nine (9) drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor. Sixteen (16) road traffic fines to the approximate value of R8000 were also issued.
The arrested persons are expected to appear in the respective magistrate courts in Uitenhage and Kwanobuhle.
Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso commended the police officials for their commitment and dedication in making sure that the communities are and feel safe. “These arrests are an indication of the integrated partnership between the SAPS, specialised units as well as metro police and traffic officials. We will continue to tighten our grip on crime and criminals during this festive season,” added Brig Kupiso.
