PORT ELIZABETH - EARLY MORNING TIP-OFF LEADS TO APPREHENSION AND ARREST OF 3 SUSPECTS WITH ABALONE WORTH OVER R700 000
Port Elizabeth police have arrested three suspects and confiscated nearly 2 000 units of abalone with an estimated value of R720 000.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says members of the Flying Squad received information that suspected abalone poachers were busy diving at Cape Recife in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She says the members spotted a white Opel Corsa at around 6 am, and while chasing it down Beach Road in Summerstrand, the occupants threw two bags of abalone out of the moving vehicle.
The car was pulled over and police found various bags of abalone inside.
The two bags that were thrown out were also recovered.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the three suspects, aged 18, 23 and 26 were arrested at the scene and are expected to appear in court on Monday.
