PORT ELIZABETH - FISHING TRIP TURNS INTO DEADLY NIGHTMARE AFTER 2 ELDERLY FISHERMEN ASSAULTED, STABBED AND ROBBED

It is alleged that at about 06:00, the men, aged 66 and 76 were standing on the rocks with their fishing rods when they were approached by two unknown males.

The men enquired from them whether they had booster cables and when they informed them that they did not have any, they walked away.

About five minutes later, they returned and one of the men grabbed the 66-year-old man from behind.

His friend then came to his assistance.

He was pointed with a firearm.

The elderly men scuffled with the two suspects and in the process, the 76-year-old sustained several stab wounds while the 66-year-old sustained two stab wounds.

The suspects ran off, taking a bag containing some fish, fishing equipment and pants.

The estimated value of the items is R5800.

The suspects also punctured two tyres on both of the victims’ cars.

They were taken to hospital for treatment.

The 76-year-old with the multiple stab wounds was treated and discharged while the 66-year-old was admitted in hospital.

A case of armed robbery and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm is under investigation.

Police are warning fishermen and joggers to be wary of their surroundings and to avoid fishing or jogging in quieter areas, during early or late hours of the day.

With the beaches closed to the public under the lockdown adjusted Level 3,  the promenade and other areas along the beachfront are very quiet and isolated thus making the few people out and about during these times easy targets for criminals.
