NELSON MANDELA BAY - AS COVID-19 CASES SURGE, NMB METRO BECOMES PROVINCIAL HOTSPOT ONCE MORE

Eastern Cape Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth has expressed concern over the surge in cases of Covid-19 in Nelson Mandela Bay, which has, once again, emerged as a provincial hotspot.

Nelson Mandela Bay currently has the highest number of infections in the Eastern Cape, with 62 790.

Meth said:

The Delta variant has been found in two of our regions - Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman - which is very concerning as this variant spreads faster and is more infectious. We urge our people to stay at home and only go out when necessary and, when they do, they must wear face masks.

The Buffalo City metro has the second highest number of infections, with 40 068 cases, followed by the Sarah Baartman region, with 23 123.

The surge in cases point to a third wave of the virus, which has been declared in many parts of the country, the department said in a statement.

The acting health superintendent-general, Mahlubandile Qwase, said healthcare workers were armed with the necessary personal protective equipment and are "ready to continue fighting this invisible enemy, like they have been doing since March last year".

A total of 744 new vaccination sites will be opened by the department on Monday.

Provincial health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said this will enable the department to be a step closer to achieving herd immunity.

The department also announced that the vaccination programme for teachers had been boosted by the delivery of 31 200 doses.

On Wednesday, the Eastern Cape police announced they had closed two police stations - Kabega Park and Algoa Park - in Gqeberha after officers tested positive for Covid-19.

The closure of the police stations will allow for deep cleaning and decontamination.
