GQEBERHA - LIFE SENTENCE FOR MAN WHO ASSUALTED, ROBBED & RAPED WOMAN 62, IN HER OVERBAAKENS HOME

A 28-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday, 17 August 2021 for the rape and robbery of an elderly Gqeberha woman.

On 27 October 2018 at about 03:00, two males broke into a house in Overbaakens, threatened, assaulted, robbed and raped the 62-year-old woman.

The case was investigated by the Gqeberha Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. In February 2020, the accused Thembelani Ntantiso was traced through fingerprint and DNA linkage to St Albans prison where he was awaiting trial for another house robbery case allegedly committed in November 2018. He was arrested in December 2018 for the house robbery.

On Tuesday, 17 August 2021, Ntantiso was sentenced in the Gqeberha Regional court to life imprisonment for rape, 15 years for house robbery and 3 years for housebreaking. The sentences will run concurrent to the life sentence.

Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Kelibone Mokhatla for her thorough investigation and successful prosecution. ‘It is very disturbing to see how our elderly women are being violated. Violence and the abuse of women must be fought by all and we need to stand united as men and women to stop this scourge and in so doing restore dignity to the victims. I commend the FCS units who are ensuring that gender-based violence cases are thoroughly investigated and perpetrators arrested and sentenced,’ added Brig Kupiso.
