GQEBERHA - SUSPECT CAUGHT WITH ABALONE WORTH OVER R250 000 AT STANFORD ROAD STOP & SEARCH

Mathemba Mathikinca (46) appeared in Gqeberha New Law court on Monday, 20 September 2021, for charges of illegal possession of abalone.


It is alleged that on Friday, 17 September 2021, the Visible Police (VISPOL) Division of South African Police Service in Gqeberha conducted a stop and search operation in Stanford Road when a grey VW Golf GTi was stopped and searched. 

Upon the search, the Vispol members are reported to have come across four black bags and one blue bag full of abalone weighing 70 kg with a street value of R251 280-00 inside the boot of the car. 

Mathikinca was immediately apprehended.

The Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks was contacted to come and take over the investigation. 

Mathikinca was remanded in custody for seven days pending profiling.
