EASTERN CAPE - CRADOCK POLICE DISCOVER 2 BAKKIES WITH 1.4 TONS OF ABALONE

On Wednesday 13 October 2021, members from the Cradock Crime Prevention Unit confiscated 1.4 tons of abalone in transit.

It is alleged that patrolling members noticed two suspicious looking bakkies driving in convoy on route through Cradock.

After a white Ford Ranger bakkie was stopped and searched in Cradock, 783 kilograms of freezed abalone was discovered and a 37-year-old male was arrested.

The other Toyota Hilux bakkie then sped off in the direction of Hofmeyr.

After a high speed chase the vehicle was found abandoned and locked in Hofmeyr, with an estimated one ton of freezed de-shelled abalone.

The abalone was handed over to Gqeberha's Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The two vehicles have also been seized pending further investigations.

The suspect will appear before the Cradock Magistrates Court on Friday, 15 October 2021 on charges relating to Possession of abalone.
