Bonakele Damsi (55) was arrested by the Gqeberha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks on 22 February 2023 for allegations of fraud and contravention of the tax administrative act.
It is alleged that during the period between February and April 2020, Damsi as the director of Damsi’s Construction Services CC submitted false Value Added Tax returns with no supporting documents.
During auditing, the company was randomly selected and red flags were identified and the matter was reported to the Hawks for expert probing.
The investigations revealed that South African Revenue Services (SARS) was nearly prejudiced cash to the value of more than R8.6 million.
Damsi was arrested during the early hours of 22 February 2022 and appeared in Gqeberha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on the very same day.
He was released on R5000 bail and the matter is remanded to 15 March 2023 for copies of the docket.
