"Although the 57 drunken drivers arrested thus far shows a marked decline compared to last Easter’s 72 at this stage, it is extremely concerning that we measured breath alcohol levels of more than 1 mg/l among those arrested”.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security Lawrence Troon says it is a miracle that these motorists did not cause serious accidents.
"Considering that the legal limit is a breath alcohol level of 0.24 mg/l or less, it is hard to believe that these individuals could even walk, let alone operate a vehicle on a public road.
"Our law enforcement operations are still ongoing, and it is disturbing that there are still people out there risking a criminal record and endangering lives by driving under the influence of alcohol.
"We are, however, very happy that fatalities on our roads decreased thus far, and hope that this will prevail. Unfortunately, we had two pedestrians killed during hit-and-run accidents on our freeways on Friday and Saturday.
"I am suitably impressed with the great work of our Traffic Department and the Metro Police in conjunction with the South African Police Services and the Eastern Cape Traffic Department,” MMC Troon said.
Dangerously high breath alcohol levels of 1.35 mg/l, 1.26 mg/l, 1.14 mg/l and 0.96 mg/l were recorded. The lowest reading was 0.37mg/l.
Of the 57 arrested thus far, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Traffic Law Enforcement unit arrested 22 and the Metro Police 35.
Money collected for outstanding warrants of arrest amount to R20 700.
