KABEGA PARK - POLICE CHASE DOWN BAKKIE WITH 620KG ABALONE WORTH OVER R300 000

 Five suspects aged between25-35 years old will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Tuesday, 9 February 2016 on a charge of illegal possession of abalone. It is alleged that on Saturday, 6 February 2016 at about 20:00 police in Kabega Park were following up on information of alleged illegal abalone activities when they spotted a suspicious white Isuzu bakkie on the N2.  Kabega police with the assistance of the Port Elizabeth Flying squad followed the vehicle. After realising that the police were following them, the vehicle sped off in the direction of Gelvandale.  The vehicle crashed into a wall in Bell Street.

The three occupants were arrested and a large quantity of abalone was seized from the vehicle. Further investigations led police back to a house in Rowallan Park where an alleged housebreaking took place.  Five freezers were found in the garage filled with abalone. The two occupants of the house was arrested. The total confiscation of abalone was 620 kg’s with an estimated street value of R372 000.
