NORTHERN AREAS - PARENTS CONTINUE TO ENFORCE SCHOOLS SHUTDOWN

Parents in Port Elizabeth's northern areas have blocked roads to schools with burning tyres and rocks, to prevent principals and teachers from returning to school.

It has been a month since they closed 52 schools in protest over teacher shortages.

Parents took their frustrations to the streets after Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, instructed principals and teachers to return to school, even if there are no pupils.

They are angry because the department only filled half of over two hundred teaching posts and say the department is not taking their demands seriously.

A parent meeting is planned for Thursday evening to discuss the way forward on their mass action.

"The MEC has lied to us we have no confidence in what the MEC has said because this has been coming for years now. We've had the same thing where he promised us, yet there was no delivery," said one parent Chief Khoisan Essay
