PORT ELIZABETH - TASK TEAM TO REVIVE R2 BILLION BUS SYSTEM

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has set up a task team to help revive its troubled R2 billion Integrated Public Transport System.

The modernised bus system was expected to be fully functional by 2010, but is yet to take off.

The buses are apparently too big for the bus lanes and doors are on the wrong side for some stops.

It’s one of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s most ambitious initiatives; a transport plan bringing it closer to its goal of becoming a world-class city.

But six years and R2 billion later, it has still not become a reality.

Opposition parties have blamed poor planning and decision-making for the bungle.

The municipality has denied it was considering selling the buses, which have been deemed too big for the narrow bus lanes.

It says a task team is investigating proposals to get the bus system operational.
