EASTERN CAPE - 23 YEAR OLD GETS 15 YEAR SENTENCE FOR RAPE OF 11 YEAR OLD

Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 23-year-old man Bathandwa Gcasambane to 15 years imprisonment for rape of an eleven-year-old girl. The accused was sentenced on Thursday, 12 September 2019 at Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that the victim was noticed by her class teacher that she was behaving strangely. The parent of the victim was invited to the school and informed of her daughter’s strange behaviour. The child was called and she was asked her problem. She then said that she was raped by the accused between 20-23 March 2018 during the day at Maseleni Locality, Qhorha Village, Dutywa.

A case of rape was registered at Dutywa Police Station. The case was then handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). The accused was traced and arrested.

Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga has welcomed the conviction and sentence of the accused. She appealed to all the women and children who are being abused to break the silence.
