PORT ELIZABETH - CELLPHONES TRACKED & RECOVERED IN NEW BRIGHTON AFTER KABEGA PARK SHOPPING CENTRE ROBBERY
It is alleged that on Thursday, 27 February 2020 at about 10:20, a cell phone shop was robbed at gunpoint. An off duty Sergeant from SAPS Kabega Park heard people screaming and went to investigate when he was informed that the shop had just been robbed.
The video footage was viewed and the getaway car was identified as a silver Mercedes Benz. He called for backup and his colleagues from the Air Wing, Flying Squad and the Anti-Gang Unit responded.
During the robbery, it was established that one of the phones taken had a tracker. The tracker was activated and the SAPS Air Wing was able to assist and the vehicle was spotted in Tshiwula Street in New Brighton. The suspects (approx. 5) abandoned the vehicle and fled. A nearby flat was searched and 33 cell phones, 3 tablets and a 9mm pistol with ammunition were recovered. The serial number of the fire arm was filed off.
The Mercedes Benz was hijacked the previous week in the Motherwell area. No suspects were arrested and the investigation is ongoing.
Mount Road Cluster Commander, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the Sergeant for his selfless act as well as the swift reaction of the specific units that led to the recovery of the stolen property, the hijacked vehicle and the firearm.
