PORT ELIZABETH - WANTED MURDER SUSPECT ARRESTED IN HELENVALE AFTER EVADING POLICE SINCE DECEMBER

SAPS Gelvandale Tracing Team members arrested wanted suspect Darren Lee Whitebooi today, 06 January 2021 in Helenvale.

The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (Gang Investigation) in Port Elizabeth issued a warrant for his arrest after he was evading police since December 2020.

It is alleged that on 13 December 2020 at about 08:00, Chester Williams (24) was kidnapped by three gang members in Fitchard Street in Helenvale. Friends of Williams approached the suspects and begged them to release Williams as he was not involved in any gang activity.

While they were negotiating with the suspects,

Williams managed to free himself and ran.

Darren Lee Whitebooi fired several shots at the fleeing Williams. He was shot multiple times and died on the scene.

On Wednesday, 06 January 2021 at about 13:00, Gelvandale Tracing Team members spotted the suspect in Martin Street and a chase ensued.

The suspect ran into a shack at the back of a house in Pienaar Street where he was apprehended.

He will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Friday, 8 January 2021 on a charge of murder.
