According to Sheryll Grobler, NSRI Gqeberha duty controller, NSRI were activated at 05h30, Sunday, 3 April, to patient evacuate the fisherman from the fishing vessel that was headed towards the Port of Port Elizabeth from fishing grounds South of Gqeberha.
Crew onboard the fishing vessel had contained and extinguished the onboard fire.
The sea rescue craft Spirit of Toft rendezvoused with the Mossel Bay fishing vessel off-shore of the Port of Port Elizabeth and medics were transferred onto the fishing vessel where they continued with medical treatment that had been initiated by the patients fellow crewmen.
In a serious but stable condition the patient was transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to the NSRI Gqeberha rescue base where medical treatment was continued in their medical room.
Ambulance services responded and in the care of paramedics the patient was transported to hospital.
